A
feminist documentation, training and resource center
Sakhi
was started in 1996 as a feminist library, documentation,
training and resource center. Sakhi means ‘women's friend'.
It is a space, for women to come together, share their pains,
anxieties, pleasures and fun.
The
initiators of Sakhi had a history of working with fish workers,
reed workers and women in the informal sector . We were part
of various people's movement and it is this perspective that
informed the analysis and vision of sakhi.
We
believe that women are not a homogeneous category and bear
the brunt of multiple oppressions and discrimination, of class,
caste and gender . It is important to weave this interrelationships
while building up a movement of women,
towards which all the activities of sakhi are geared.
